Scoring a scholarship to the prestigious Emory University, Lyla thrived in her independence, humble beginnings notwithstanding. And her academic prowess did not go unnoticed; at 21 she was offered a staff position with a small, indepedent paper in New York City. Tethered to neither place nor person, she seized upon the opportunity, packed up her aging Volvo and never looked back.
Life in New York City was not without it's challenges. Never the one to easily befriend and rarely if ever approachable, Lyla struggled to acclimate to the breakneck speeds of city life. Throwing herself into her work, she soon found her niche in investigative journalism. Her big break came after she penned a scathing exposé on city hall and police brutality, and the article - unbeknownst to her at the time - curried favor from the notorious Colombo family. Shortly after a clandestine introduction to their matriarch, Lyla had fully ingratiated herself into the organization and was regularly called upon to spin her OpEd pieces in favor of the family and their various "philanthropic" deeds.
At present, Lyla is a violent crimes reporter for the New York Post, writing under the pseudonym "Maggie Walker".
Mary Walker was born into an abusive home. Her parents would furiously argue with each other, traumatizing her as an infant. Abused as a child, one day when a hand (possibly her father’s) reached into her crib the first of her multiple personalities manifested itself in a wild, clawing rage that lashed out. Mary was found to have telepathic, telekinetic and pyrokinetic abilities and was taken away and institutionalized. Her persona as Mary was gentle and cooperative, but weak and prone to seizures and other disorders. Her second identity was uncontrollable and murderous, and constantly ran a fever, giving rise to her name: Typhoid. While in the institution, she was trained in her telepathy, but also experimented on and abused.
Eventually she escaped and woke up one morning to find herself in a hotel room with rope burns and a bruised lip; as Mary, she was totally unaware of what had happened while as her other persona(e). Mary tried to become an actress and was good at it but this was short-lived and she disappeared.
Re-emerging as a prostitute working in a brothel and going by the name Lyla, Daredevil (Matt Murdock) came across her while on the hunt for one of the Fixer’s associates. Mary and her fellow prostitutes attacked Matt, fearing a police raid and she was thrown from a window. Recovering from near death after that fall, Typhoid re-took control of Mary, swearing never to be hurt by a man again and beginning her criminal career.

Mary Walker suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder and her different personalities frequently struggle for dominance or oppose each other. Each distinct personae manifests different heart rates, alpha waves, biorhythms, and even scent. Her hair style, texture, facial expressions each change markedly, and her skin will often become flushed to varying degrees depending on the aggressive personality in charge. Even those with enhanced senses and/or perceptions, such as Daredevil or Wolverine, are usually unable to recognize her different selves.
